I am Ming Shuang, a year 2 in Law & Management. I love the rainy season, walking in the rain, reading and learning new languages.
I used to dream of learning every language in the world so that I can read and understand every book in the world. So, why don't you follow me on this journey to learn Japanese through TUYU' songs?
Why Guided Learning?
Guided Learning is a Temasek Polytechnic Fundamental (TPFund) module where students are introduced to the concepts and process of self-directed learning. Students get to plan their individual learning project, execute the learning plan, and monitor and reflect on their learning progress with the guidance of their assigned Learning Facilitator. The process focuses on the 4 stages - planning, performing, monitoring and reflecting.
I have prior experience in self-learning Japanese. However, I would always end up giving up halfway as I did not have enough patience, discipline and the time to do so. I chose Guided Learning to challenge myself to become a more patient and disciplined person and hone my time management skill.
TUYU logo
TUYU (ツユ) is a Japanese pop group formed on June 12, 2019 consisting of ぷす (pusu) as the music composer & guitarist, 礼衣 (Rei) as the vocalist & miro as the pianist. The group's name comes from the Japanese word "梅雨" meaning "rainy season".
I chose TUYU as TUYU was the first Japanese artist I ever fell in love with. The first TUYU song I listened to was Compared Child by TUYU. I was drawn to the translated English lyrics that hits home for me as someone who always struggle with being not good enough. I also found the art-style of the music video cute in contrast to the heavy theme behind the song.
With the guidance of my Learning Facilitator Ms. Yayoi Suzuki, I was inspired to analyze the lyrics and visuals from TUYU songs as well as explore the cultural elements present in the songs.
The process involved:
Learning the Japanese words from the song lyrics and gather the unfamiliar words into a glossary
Translating and interpreting the Japanese songs into English in my own words
Analyzing the various visuals used in the music videos and reflecting on the song
Researching on the possible cultural element present in the music video.
