Activity 1. Look at the pictures, listen and read the sentences from the song.
Аалы кайдал? = Where is their home?
Чери кайдал? = Where is their land?
Let's translate the sentences word-for-word:
As you can see, there are no verbs like "am," "is," or "are" connecting the words in the sentences. The question word "кайдал" (=where) is at the end of a sentence. The nouns have special endings indicating 3rd person possession (his, her, their). You can read more on this topic here.
Activity 2. You can ask questions combining a noun without any endings (for example, "аал" instead of "аалы" or "чер" instead of "чери") and the question word "кайдал." These questions are also grammatically correct.
Listen and repeat the example sentences below which were made up from the words in the song.
As you can see in Part 1, the song "Коңгурой" consists of four "where" questions, only instead of one noun there is a group of nouns preceding the question word "кайдал."
Activity 3. You can use the noun + кайдал structure to ask after people and places in everyday life. Listen and repeat the example sentences below which were made up from the international words and personal names.
Learning strategy
How do you learn new vocabulary in a foreign language? There are numerous techniques but I will name just three of them.
1. You can create images corresponding to new words, either in your imagination or on a piece of paper. These images should trigger your memory to remember the word. For example, to remember the word "аал" (= home, yurt), you can imagine your friend Al sitting proudly in front of a yurt with a lamb on his lap. This is a time-consuming technique, but it is useful when you are just starting to learn a new language, and you have no other points of reference other than your first language.
2. You can create word cards, on paper or digitally (for example, using Quizlet). You need to write a key word and, preferably, a sentence the key word is used in, on one side of the word card, and the translation on the other side. You can learn the words and test yourself using the cards.
3. Keep practicing the vocabulary with spaced intervals (for example, every day for three days, a week later, a month later), and you will be able to recall words without cards or images at some point. It is useful to have a notebook or a file on your computer for recording vocabulary, drawing images, and organizing words into groups. Even if you forget the word, you can come back to your notes and remember not only the single word, but the sentence it is used in and the other words you learned at that day.
Please proceed to Part 3 Exercises 1 to practice the new vocabulary and remember the vocabulary from Song #1.
