As an Emergency Room Stocker, I make rounds in the Emergency Room replacing and discarding of soiled linens, and restocking blankets, towels, gowns, and bed sheets in each cabinet. I also check in with patients as is necessary to make sure they are not in emergent need of anything, and if they are, I alert the nurses right away. I love this service because, once again, I can interact with so many different people and I really feel like I am helping to ensure that the patient has all the linens or other materials they need to make their hospital stay as comfortable as possible.
In both positions I have had to utilize my Spanish to communicate with the large Spanish-speaking population in Lawrence, MA. My efforts were always met with appreciation and my fluency in the language, along with my comfort in speaking it conversationally have improved drastically as a result. I have always been fascinated with the Spanish language and have wanted to work toward fluency for many years, so I am really grateful to these service opportunities for allowing me to be fully immersed in a setting where the language is spoken often.
For three years, I have been an active volunteer at Lawrence General Hospital. Though I have rotated through a variety of positions, my main responsibilities were as a Greeter/Escort and an Emergency Room Stocker. I have accumulated about 90 hours of service at the hospital and have loved every minute of it!
As a Greeter/Escort, I work alongside the head secretary, greeting all patients and families that enter the hospital and, if necessary, escorting them to their desired destination. I also run various errands such as retrieving wheelchairs for the main lobby, relaying messages to different departments, and helping to make sure the lobby is clean and inviting. The Lawrence General volunteer offices believe strongly that service "gives people the opportunity to meet new people and forge relationships that cross generations and cultures" and I could not agree more. I have had the opportunity to meet people from diverse walks of life, hear their stories, and help play a part in making their hospital experience better. Whether it is a warm greeting, accompanying a patient to their appointment, or directing an expectant mother to labor and delivery, this service has afforded me the opportunity to connect and gain perspective on the value of small acts of kindness.
