I got an ice cream maker for Christmas. More accurately, I bought myself an ice cream maker for Christmas. My old one bit the dust after our freezer became an ice cave and we had to chip the ice cream freezer bowl out with a pick. Very frustrating and also, I may add, quite dangerous. Talia and I are reading "Officer Buckle and Gloria" and I can just hear him saying "Safety Tip #102: Never de-ice a freezer with an ice pick, unless you are wearing polycarbonate goggles and heavy duty gloves". Alternatively, you can do the manly thing and buy a new freezer... which then means you replace the ice cream bowl because how can you live without one. (You won't be able to after Pinterest). I found a steal of a deal the week after Christmas, 50% off with free shipping, so it was a no brainer. The day after the box arrived, Nathanael unpacked it and immediately wanted to try it out. He is nothing if not efficient. I of course have planned for such occasions (NOT), and happened to have a bottle of passion fruit puree in the new freezer... remember how I buy yarn? That is how I buy grocery items at Cash and Carry. So we made the simple syrup, added puree and in less than 15 minutes, the paddles were churning and the sorbet was being made. I cannot tell you how exciting this is. My kids love sorbet. Sorbet comes in teeny tiny pint sized containers at $4-5 a pop. We can polish off two pints in one sitting. This thing is going to save us money! Now I'm eyeing the heretofore ignored large containers of heavy whipping cream at Costco. And, the ice cream maker comes with two bowls which means two flavors at once! Hear me scream (HOORAY!) for ice cream!
Because I plan ahead (ha, ha), today I was pulling miscellaneous bags of berries out of the freezer. I had enough strawberries for a batch of strawberry ice cream, and leftover marionberries from Meira's pie making project for a batch of marionberry ice cream. Further excavation brought out a 1/2 cup of frozen raspberries. I decided to combine those with the cup of leftover strawberries and the 10 leftover marionberries which gave me barely enough for a "triple berry" sorbet. So yeah, I know, I only have two bowls and three flavors... there are worse things in life.
I will not even tell you how much cream I used. This is the smaller of the two cartons. At least the sorbet will be fat free. I added some Meyer Lemon Juice to the sorbet mixture, and nowadays I cannot throw citrus peels away. I zested this one for soap.
I had these fresh raspberries secretly stashed in the refrigerator. If they are not discovered and eaten before tonight, they may make it as a topping for the ice cream... yum!
I will post a picture of the finished ice cream later... if it's not inhaled before I can reach the camera.
