Know your limits. Consider length of your hike or bike ride as well as the difficulty.
Plan your outing. Bring a map, know where you are going, and let someone know.
Travel with others. Hiking or biking with one or more people is always a good idea.
Pack water. Plan a half-liter per hour in moderate heat and one liter per hour in high heat.
Pack food or a snack. Take some trail mix or trail bars for some quick energy.
Wear the right attire. Wear your sunglasses, hiking hats, helmets, and any other gear that's fit for purpose. Also remember to wear sunscreen.
Bring the right tools. For biking, make sure you have a spare tube and all the right tools to change a flat tire or to fix any other minor repair.
Beware of rattlesnakes. If you see one, back away slowly. Stay at least 10 feet away. If you are bit, get medical attention as soon as possible. Exertion spreads venom faster, so keep your heart rate as slow as you can.
Beware of cactus. Pack a comb and tweezers. A comb is good for safely removing a cactus ball. Tweezers are good for removing individual spines.
