Methane and nitrous oxide in the South China Sea and the West Philippines Sea

Tseng et al., 2016 Deep-Sea Research I

Tseng et al., 2017 Continental Shelf Research

The surface CH4 and N2O concentrations both exceeded atmospheric equilibrium in the SCS and the concentrations were 4.5±3.6 and 7.59±1.32, respectively. The surface CH4 and N2O concentrations in the WPS were 3.0±1.2 nmol /L and 5.19±1.26 nmol /L, respectively. The sea-to-air fluxes were calculated, and the SCS was found to emit CH4 and N2O to the atmosphere at 8.6±6.4 μmol/m2/d and 5.5±3.9 μmol/m2/d, respectively. In addition, the WPS emitted CH4 to the atmosphere at 4.9±4.9 μmol/m2/d and was a sink for N2O at a rate of -1.7±3.9 μmol/m2/d, respectively.

Social-environmental analysis of methane in the South China Sea and bordering countries

This study is a preliminary assessment of the greenhouse effect of CH4 emissions in the SCS on human welfare using the driver-pressure-state-impact-response (DPSIR) framework and the systems approach framework (SAF). The study analyzed the economic drivers and human activities that cause the pressure on the environment and increase CH4 emissions in the region. In addition, the possible future impact of climate change on human welfare is also discussed in the study. Finally, the study identified eight management responses across various spatial and temporal scales that can be useful in addressing the issue of greenhouse gas (CH4) in the SCS.

Seasonal variations of marine environment and primary production in the Taiwan Strait

Tseng et al., 2020 Frontiers in Marine Science

The first data set of seasonal marine environment and euphotic zone integrated primary production (IP) variations in the Taiwan Strait was reported. The measured annual IP was 123±86 gC/m2/year, and its seasonal variations can be described with a left-skewed normal distribution curve. The average seasonal IP values from the highest to the lowest were summer, autumn, spring, and winter.

It is worth to mention that offshore wind farm (OWF) construction in the Taiwan Strait is on-going. As primary production is the foundation for a marine ecosystem and supports the food web and fish stock, the results of this research can not only be used as the baseline for evaluating the OWF impact on the marine ecosystem but also be used for assessing their influence on fishery resources.
