Act I Scene XI
Nick is struggling to figure out what to write a musical about, and he must produce a hit show, so he visits Nostradamus again, after he convinced him that “nothing’s as amazing as a musical.” Nostradamus shares more visions with Nick about what Shakespeare’s next hit show will be about, so Nick can create a show that is sure to be a hit. Excited and inspired by Nostradamus’s visions, Bottom has his own visions of his future where he becomes famous for his musical, people worship him like Shakespeare, and Shakespeare himself is jealous of his talent. The audience should pick up that Nostradamus’s visions are a little off because he thinks Shakespeare’s show will be called Omelette and have a breakfast theme, but it’s actually Shakespeare’s Hamlet, which definitely has nothing to do with breakfast. So, he has kind of led Nick in the wrong direction...
Nick ~ A struggling playwright who needs a hit show in order to stay in business; also an actor and director; absolutely HATES Shakespeare (because he’s really jealous of him); has big dreams; stubborn; confident; Nigel’s brother
Nostradamus ~ A fortune teller whose visions are inaccurate; strange and loopy; funny
Nigel ~ A playwright in business with his brother, Nick; intelligent and thoughtful; sweet; awkward; anxious; shy
Shakespeare ~ An extremely famous playwright who acts and is treated like a rock star; arrogant; overconfident; selfish; steals ideas from others; heartthrob; dramatic and over-the-top; genius
Chorus ~ Miscellaneous characters in the scene: Bea (Nick’s wife), townspeople, Renaissance writers
Soothsayer Alley in London, England
1595 (Renaissance)
The Puritans gained power from the Black Plague, Protestant Reformation, and Europeans started immigrating to America. Also, it was the Renaissance, so everything was new and improving! (The Renaissance is not really an issue, but it's very relevant and important!)
Concept Statement: Things are finally looking up!
