Throughout time, gender has been a question and confusion that has been very consistent. The ideology of gender is a topic that developed and took shape around the 1500s-1600s with the persian army, then spreading throughout the world for other people to shape and create themselves. Many of the gender ideologies we are accustomed to today are due to the mere development during that time period and the continued belief of those ideologies throughout time. In the 21st century, gender inequality and gender ideology issues/arguments have been something that has surfaced to universities, political debates and other advocates to the understanding of how these specific ideologies have taken root in the minds of so many. Although culture in some places plays a major part in gender ideology, in the U.S. as Americans we have integrated those into our own “culture” through the power of the majority. Through our research and discussion, we want to make clear that the gender ideology in the United States are these “shared ideas/rules about gender & how men & women are, and should be”. That being said, we don't want to persuade, but inform/enlighten viewers that gender ideologies are created in order to control our self perception in order to support how society (in the United States) is shaped. How people “do gender” is based on the “gender rules” and how society keeps people within these rules is “gender policing”. We used a road map kind of technique in order to guide viewers in the path to better be understanding and enlightened to the truth of what gender is and how it is something that has no boundaries nor rules, but is something that has been used to “police”/control people into a certain way of ideology in order to have control over them throughout our time. This website, although a lot, will provide the necessary information and knowledge for our viewers to fully understand the history and straight facts about how gender has been shaped, and how in turn, that shaping and control over the idea of gender has created these unnecessary issues and forever lasting arguments about gender inequality. It is up to the people who seek the truth about gender, who will help reshape the world and help move the United States in the direction of gender freedom thus helping resolve (over time) this issue of gender inequality that these enforced ideologies have placed on us throughout time.
The history page of our site is intended to inform viewers about the origins and development of gender ideologies and how they have contributed to gender inequality overtime. In order to fully grasp the concept of gender inequality, it is important that you first understand that gender roles are not natural. Our perceptions and opinions of what is normal for each sex is not something that we are born with, but they are shaped by our upbringings and society. An example of this that almost everyone has encountered is the common associations that many people make with gender and the colors pink and blue. Blue is “masculine” and pink is “feminine” therefore all girls should like pink and every boy should like blue. Many of us that were raised with siblings were taught that if there’s a blue toy, it has to be for the male sibling, because “pink is only for girls”. These color associations are unnatural because they are views and rules that are usually forced on children at young ages so that they behave in a manner that society deems acceptable. On our site, we decided to discuss how the wearing of heels changed over time. Though this seems like a subject of little importance, it shows how details as small as footwear can influence our everyday opinions, decisions, and perceptions of one another. This also demonstrates the importance of the time period and the media and how they influence and create trends. In society today, many people are a lot more open-minded about gender roles and are not as strict, which is progress.
In regards to our fast facts page, there have been a lot issues of gender inequality going on in households, workplaces, and in general. Some say that men receive more money than women do at work and women should play the roles as housewives, but we disagree to those facts, because most women are able to receive job opportunities in numerous workplaces in order to help provide for their families. This proves that not all women can be stay-at-home mothers all the time while men go to their workplaces every day just like most families did back in the 1950s. It is clear that both men and women can be hired in numerous workplaces for any career in particular, such as law firms, hospitals, schools, and restaurants. In addition, some men can be stay-at-home dads working from home as well as women. Men and women do not have to agree with what human societies want them to be or do what they were positioned for based on their gender.
To this day, people can still witness multiple issues of gender inequality in many public areas and behind closed doors when at home. For example, some men continue to dominate their households over their wives and children (just like they would back in the 1950s and 1960s). Even at workplaces, women were often discriminated from receiving promotion, while men were given all the credit for their “hard work”, especially when it was the women’s idea that was stolen by their male co-workers. This could also be an example of narcissistic abuse at home and sexism in public areas because most men refused to admit that they feel threatened by women who are actually doing better in life. When a man feels threatened by a woman’s bigger success, he would do anything they can to downgrade a woman for their own superiority. I believe that women should not be inferior to men during our present time because it would hurt our new generation and make the “old norm” look like the “new norm” to where people continue to be discriminated from their supposed roles of their lives based on their gender. We all know that people are all created as equal human beings.
The gender equality today page, ties everything together and shows everyone the message that we are trying to show our audience How gender inequality has affected us today & how one can come to break the control of the ideology. The ideology behind Gender is that it is something that has no boundaries nor rules but is something that has been used to “police'' people into a certain way in order to have control over them throughout our time. But there are people such as nonbinary people who go against the gender rules by understanding themselves more deeply than people who are still under control of this ideology. Because of that non-binary people are unable to be policed, which is why society does not accept them. Nonbinary people are persons that don’t fall into traditional gender roles. They are basically questioning why there are only two genders and saying why they can’t just be free to be whatever or whomever they want to be. A non-binary individual is (does not identify) neither man nor woman. However, they can classify with certain characteristics of either sex or have a sense of self that is altogether outside the binary. They dress however they want and be whoever they want to be. Some people in today’s society are starting to accept non binary people but most people still abide by the gender rules and place nonbinary people into gender categories, or do not accept them as part of “normal” society. It's still hard though because when they go on job interviews and don’t dress the way their gender has been policed to dress, they get told that they can’t have the job if they don’t dress that certain way. For example, If a male is wearing a skirt, he will get told to go back home and change. They are very open to talking to people about it and telling them their pronouns. To most non binary people identifying this way helps them feel a sense of freedom to be whoever they want to be whether the public accepts it or not; they are still going to keep identifying themselves in this way. They just want people to be able to have individual expression and not have to follow gender norms. Overall, once one is able to fully understand how gender has continued to be shaped in our world, they'll be able to break that control that these ideologies and inequalities have on us from before birth, and live free of boundaries in order to fully and truthfully express oneself in and out. Whether one chooses to identify as non binary or not, anyone can come to understand this control that gender norms have on human kind (in the U.S.).
