True Voice Project is a volunteer run, independent, actively performing 501(c)3 non-profit community choir based out of Flemington, NJ for high school aged singers, infused at the roots with the goal of fostering individuals to grow as musicians and members of a collaborative group. Now in its sixth year, the group has enjoyed success under the philosophy of “Process Over Product” – in other words, that a balance of power is held between the members and directors, creating a rich, meaningful, music-making experience.
During weekly rehearsals, members are encouraged to use their musical knowledge and gifts to work with directors on selecting repertoire, arranging music, and suggesting ways in which to enhance and add to baseline ideas. Through this process, singers are challenged to respect differences and engage in all aspects of creating music and building an artistic community. There is little weight placed on a member’s prior experience, as all skill levels are welcome, and learning from each other is an invaluable experience that becoming a part of the group can bring.
Students also have the opportunity to work peer-to-peer in what are known as “group projects.” These smaller groups work together with minimal influence of the directors to choose songs, create arrangements, and add musical enhancements to their liking, leaving them with the experience of working with others and balancing a group’s opinions. Pieces worked on in both the full choir and group projects are performed throughout the year at various local events in the community.
