Once joining a troop, you can decide how much effort you want to put into advancing ranks. There are seven total ranks in BSA, Eagle Scout being the highest. In order to become an Eagle Scout, a scout first must advance through all the past ranks, complete merit badges, fulfill all the requirements in their handbook, and execute an eagle project that betters their community. The rank of Eagle Scout is an honor to achieve and only about 5% of scouts become Eagle Scouts. Rank advancement is dependent on the scout, with leader support. The rank advancement order goes as follows:
Scout is the first rank in Scouting, achieved by joining a troop and be able to recite certain Scouting expressions and explain their meaning. This is to introduce the principles of Scouting as early as possible.
Tenderfoot is the second rank in Scouting, achieved by completing requirements related to hiking, camping, principles of Scouting, first aid, and respect to the American Flag.
Second Class is the third rank in Scouting, achieved by completing requirements related to camping, cooking, wood tools, orienteering, flag ceremonies, wildlife, first aid, swimming, community service, personal safety, and drug and alcohol prevention.
