For a few days, there was something annoying me. Not just me, but the entire school. The UT Austin admissions office messed up big time with their early action decision roll out, and it was clearly affecting my senior classmates' mental health. I ached to have an outlet to express my concerns and disappoint, however deep inside, I was scared to say my thoughts aloud. My anxiety that I had long suppressed rose up during this, but I knew I couldn't just leave it like this. So, I mustered up the courage to talk to the magazine Editor-in-Chief at the time, Anisha Mandem, and she motivated me to stick up for myself and the students of Prosper High.
I love the freedom and power opinion pieces give me — it almost makes me feel invincible. In fact, my fondness of this type of writing shifted my focus from solely rolling out articles to protecting my team's editorial rights because I knew as we covered controversial issues, we would have to arm ourselves with the resources needed to shield what the First Amendment allows us to write on. In uncertain times like this where topics like politics and human rights are fragile, opinion articles are vital to help preserve our democracy and our opinions on the climate surrounding it. They're especially impactful to help spread awareness in the local community.

For me to write paragraphs upon paragraphs on a topic that is not assigned to me, I have to be very passionate about it — which is exactly the case for this article. I thought it would be perfect to write about my opinion on Thanksgiving with the holiday being around the corner, and I feel like my feelings came through strongly through my choice of wording and historical context given. Writing about this also helped me figure out that other students shared the same opinion as me, and we bonded over that through the newspaper.

I put UT Austin on a pedestal for the longest time. But, writing this editorial changed that view. I critiqued the university in ways that felt genuine and mindful of the students who were going through the college admissions process. This was my way of symphazing with those seniors while also acknowledging the work that UT Austin needed to do in order to fix its ways.

While I still want to report on local underrepresented issues and politics, that doesn't mean that I have to deter from the fun topics, like this review. My teammate, Aarushi, and I wanted to match the summer vibe of the students and residents in Prosper while also attracting those who frequented drink places, so we hopped in my car and toured these local businesses.
Something Important to Note
The editorials our newspaper staff write take the opinion of the editorial board and we discuss our stance on the issues written extensively on a weekly basis. Opinions, columns, and reviews, on the other hand, while still approved by the board, are the opinions of the individual who writes them.
As seen in the screenshot above, this information is also for the public to know — we follow strict transparency in order to ensure trust and credibility within our opinion pieces.
