Packaging up the story
Packaging up the story
Collin County Republican Party Leader Shelby Williams is taking his place to speak in the front of the room while I haul my tripod up the stairs to record another angle of the republican party council meeting. It's always awkward trying to set up a camera in situations like these, especially when 50 pairs of eyes are also following you up the stairs. But, it is still needed. Regular people deserve an inside look into the working of their local government, which is why I volunteered to film this meeting by myself, despite the uncomfortableness.
Broadcasts take stories up to the next level, whether it be news, feature, or sports. They allow viewers to see the emotions on the interviewees' faces, witness the event as it happened, and leaves them feeling more impacted. While they are a pain to put together, I find these projects to be especially rewarding as I mesh all perspectives into one cohesive story. Multimedia in general brings the information down-to-earth and adds a personal touch to the relevant topics of today's society.

The 2024 presidential election was coming up and I knew that I wanted to cover an aspect of it. Many of my peers, however, seemed to know little information about this election and those who were 18 hadn't resgistered to vote yet, which was concerning since it's their civil right and this important event only happens once every four years. Politics already feels inaccessible and too complex for most. This video package broke down youth voting to motivate one of the biggest age groups to vote and contribute to our democracy.

This video package marked my first introduction to video editing on Premiere Pro, and it helped me build video editing baseline skills. Not only that, my teammate Aarushi and I, felt that an act like volunteering deserves to be recorded and appreciated by all, and so we thought it would make for a memorable video package. The volunteers and coordinators we interviewed offered great resources to give back to the community and even dove into their backstories, which did make us emotional at times.
Podcasts
Podcasting is such an underrated tool to share passionate stories, helpful information, and reliable advice. It makes this information more accessible for people who lead busy lives, especially students. For me, I quickly bonded with my teammates over our shared collaboration on these podcasts, and they became a vital source of story telling for the school. The skills I learned in Premiere Pro translated smoothly to Adobe Audition, allowing for me to publish episodes consistently.

Once again, my love for news writing and local politics played a role in motivating me to start this podcast with Aarushi. We figured that this would be a study tool for students in UIL Current Issues & Events and our contribution to our community. Every Monday morning, we would carpool to school early to film these episodes, take turns editing during newspaper class, and publish to Spotify. After some time, it became habit.

I can never leave my student press rights work on the backburner. During one of the NVT leadership meetings, one of the officers had the great idea of starting a podcast to spread further awarness on student censorship. I quickly jumped to help start it and be a host with officer Sydney Ortiz. After days of extensively planning on Google Docs and Facetiming, Ortiz and I were able to record the episode, despite her living four hours away from me in Houston. It felt great to express my viewpoints about this topic and the work I'm doing for it with someone who agreed with me.
Behind the Scenes
Recording our podcasts allows viewers to see our facial expressions and hand gestures, allowing them to immerse themselves better in our conversation. Below are two videos that we had recorded to give another engaging aspect to the piece while also giving viewers a taste of how podcasting is done.
Around the World
The technicalities behind our first episode of "Around the World."
In order to minimize pauses and misinformation on current events, we always wrote a rough script beforehand. Above is the first page of it.
Beyond the Byline
Having captions on our video ensures that we stay accessible to everyone, and the clean format is easy to process.
This planning document shows how much organization and planning went into the first episode. We knew that a good amount of people would watch it, so we wanted to be as prepared as possible.
