Philippians 3:12-14 - “Not as though I had already attained, either were already perfect: but I follow after, if that I may apprehend that for which also I am apprehended of Christ Jesus. Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended: but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before, I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.”
It’s always exciting as we move into a new year, many look at it as an opportunity for a new beginning. We all have encountered circumstances and situations that can leave us feeling overwhelmed and weary, we can become physically and emotionally exhausted, so the thoughts of a new year can bring a sense of relief! I like the instructions of the Apostle Paul, let’s forget those things which are behind, and reach forth unto those things which are before, press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus. We can’t push the delete button and all the things that we dealt with in the past will disappear, however, as we pursue the presence of our mighty God, the limitations, the circumstances and situations that hindered last year will not dictate and direct our path that we walk in this new year! As we reach forth unto the things of God, a renewed vision will fill our hearts, new opportunities will emerge, and we will step into the purpose and plan that God has for us!
Salt of the Earth - Matthew 5:13, “Ye are the salt of the earth: but if the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be salted? it is thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out, and to be trodden under foot of men.” Jesus called His followers, “the salt of the earth”. Salt is a preservative, it is used to preserve food. Just as salt preserves, our lives should have a preserving effect because we have the only message that can deliver people from the corruption of sin and give them eternal life. Salt also enhances the flavor of food. A Christlike character and Godly lifestyle will draw others to Jesus. The hope, joy, and contentment, along with many other godly qualities that are seen by our family, friends and even total strangers, helps them realize their need for a relationship with Jesus Christ. Salt also has unique healing properties, as does the gospel. Daily we have the opportunity to offer the truth that brings spiritual healing to those trapped in the darkness and despair of sin. Just as the natural salt heals, preserves and enhances, Jesus placed a greater emphasis on us being spiritual salt to a world that is in desperate need! Let’s stay salty! Reading and studying the word of God, praying without ceasing, keeping our hearts and minds refreshed in the presence of God will enable us daily to be the salt of the earth!
The Power of Prayer - 2 Corinthians 1:3-8
Paul did many mighty things. He preached before multitudes, healed the sick, performed miracles, and founded numerous churches. Yet he was not immune from discouragement or doubt. He, too, went through tough experiences. He experienced “afflictions”; he admitted that he and his companions were “burdened excessively, beyond our strength, so that we despaired even of life”. Through all these things, he emerged victoriously. In the passage of scripture, he acknowledged to the Corinthians that it was because of their prayers, he obtained victory. He knew many had prayed for him and he wanted them to know that their prayers made a difference! Prayer is powerful! As Paul experienced, prayer can help open doors, prayer convicts people of sin. Through prayer, we see miracles performed and lives changed. Through prayer, we share the burdens of those in need and are used as an instrument in meeting those needs.Today, recognize the power of prayer in your life. Do not allow your heart to be filled with doubt. Do not hesitate or delay. Pray with intensity and conviction. Know that your prayers make a difference in the lives of other people and the world!
The Gospel of Jesus Christ - Jude 1:3, ...that ye should earnestly contend for the faith which was once delivered unto the saints. This passage of scripture has always inspired me to keep on, keeping on! With the blatant and intentional attack on righteousness and the rejection of truth that we see happening in our world, I'm moved even the more to proclaim the Gospel of Jesus Christ. We know just as we passionately desire to share this glorious gospel, there are those who seek to distort or dilute the pure message of Christ. Many have added their own ideas and opinions, they've distorted the divine instruction that the Spirit of God birthed and inspired these great men and women to write. There will always be those who try to make the Gospel less…or more…than it is, there’s an enormous pressure for the church to stand down and to relinquish the standard set by God’s word. The challenge for the church is to be firm, not wavering, having strong conviction to present the truth of Christ Jesus. Just as the Lord spoke to Joshua, He’s speaking to this generation that we “be strong and courageous”, to be diligent, faithful and contend for the truth of God’s word!
