Day 2 was the first day of rain, as well as the day we lost Thomas. On our first night on the trail, Thomas suffered an allergic reaction, preventing him from continuing the hike. So, on the morning of Day 2, we had to climb a muddy mountain path without one of our most positive and supportive members. The rain continued on and off throughout the day, slowly working its way through our raincoats and ponchos.
Lunch was a bright spot in the grey waters of day 2. We stopped at some fallen logs near the trail and devoured some peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, beef jerky, trail mix, and sausage. We said midday prayer as well, which is the first time that most of us had said midday prayer during the rain. Soon enough, though, we set back out to finish the hike.
This was one of our longest hikes of the trip, and we definitely felt that once we were nearing dinner time and we still hadn't made it to camp. Seeing that everyone needed hot food and a hotter fire, the group decided to send a few brave hikers ahead of the main party to get fires set up in camp early. David Richman, Dr. Krom, Jonah Vaglia, and John Hurley practically ran ahead of the main group, so that once we arrived at camp there was a warm fire waiting.
In many ways, this was the hardest day of the hike. It was the first day of rain, which meant that we had completed the second half of the hike with wet shoes and wet clothes. However, the bright side was that the next day was Sunday, and we only had a short walk the next morning to get to our food resupply and, more importantly, the outdoor Mass we would be attending.
