"A healing centered approach to addressing trauma requires a different question that moves beyond “what happened to you” to “what’s right with you” and views those exposed to trauma as agents in the creation of their own well-being rather than victims of traumatic events."

The purpose of this toolkit is to provide Community Child & Youth Workers with resources to understand and identify trauma. In addition, the tools can assist in the development of important place-based prevention and early intervention strategies to support children at risk.
With 1 in 3 children reporting Adverse Childhood Experiences, there is a great benefit to designing community programs and services that can mitigate the long term effects and create spaces of healing.
Community Houses are well positioned directly in neighbourhoods of great need. The Community House model identifies the needs of the community and builds on assets to create support and change. Furthermore, Community Houses have the ability to work with the whole family, which increases healing into the home environment.
The Trauma Toolkit is designed to equip Community Child & Youth Workers who work with children 6-18 years of age with knowledge and tools to offer healing-centered programs within the community. Through increased awareness and reflective practice, your Community House will continue to be an important resource for the children in our neighbourhoods.
