The invitation
The invitation is to participate in a dialogue, in a format of a workshop, where you and others will have an opportunity to share your experiences as a transnational scholar from the global south.
Your experience will help us - Roxana, Iris and Evelyn- to co-create the book “Transnational academics from the global south: treasuring all the knowledges”. This book is part of the Routledge Series “Insiders Guide”.
The content of the book will be presented in terms of essays, letters, poems and drawings. An important part of these pieces will be developed by Evelyn, Iris and Roxana, but you are more than welcome to write one of these letters and poems if you wish so.
The meanings of South
In our context, the south does not represent a merely geographical location, but also an epistemic and life position of having experienced the greatest cost of globalisation.
Transnational academics
We use the term "transnational academics” instead of "international academics" to acknowledge that academics and students who have crossed national borders correspond to a larger and more heterogeneous group of individuals than people holding visas with academic purposes. Refugees, undocumented and immigrant postgraduate students are also transnational academics.
Topics in the workshops
The invitation is to talk about “knowledges” that you wished you had before starting the academic path and the “knowledges” you brought from home that helped you to navigate academia in a different place to where you were born.
We are using the word “knowledges” to recognize the diverse knowledges and ways of knowing that were important to you during your experience of studying and working in a different country, away from home.
Respect
The dialogues will happen with other people that we may not know. In any moment, we will ask you to contribute to create a safe and respectful space.
Speaking from your own experience
It is likely that in these workshops, we may hear opinions that are different from our own and/or positions that completely resonate with our experiences.
In any of these cases, we would like to ask you to refrain from commenting on others' positions, and speak from your own experience. We will commit to adhere to the same.
Confidentiality
You and others will be sharing personal stories that may be sensitive and personal. As such, we ask you to subscribe to an agreement of confidentiality where you commit to not share the name and personal information of the people that you are in conversation with. Also, it is likely that one of the participants in the dialogue requests to reserve their stories and not allude to it at all. In that case, we would like to subscribe to this degree of confidentiality. We commit to do the same.
About your own story and freedom to pause your participation at any moment
You have the absolute right to share what feels safe and okay to you. You can paause or withdraw from the the conversations that happen during the workshop at any moment, without having to explain your reasons. We -Roxana, Iris, and Evelyn- will be constantly checking on how you feel during the workshop.
