Support for the Transition Model has now ceased. This page is for reference only.
Transition into Higher Education and its effect on student retention is a known issue for the sector. Sheffield Hallam University (SHU) faces an additional challenge in that its applied learning ethos, as part of our Highly Skilled Employability commitment, is often unfamiliar to incoming learners.
While large amounts of information are provided to students to support them in their physical transition to SHU, their academic transition has been less well supported – often addressed solely through general academic skills training.
Although, we recognise these types of support as essential for our new arrivals, we identified that there was no discipline-specific focus on teaching and learning. Moreover, there was no explicit link at this initial stage between academic content and expert performance (Herrington et al, 2006). Furthermore, the aim of this work was to recognise the different backgrounds of our learners and recognise the valuable insight this can bring.
A transition model - "A Taste of SHU" - has been developed to give new HE learners an authentic context to a topic from their subject discipline, supplemented with a selection of authentic tasks to apply this knowledge while drawing on their own experiences. Finally, the model provides an opportunity for learners to link to professional practice.
The model that has been developed takes an innovative approach to supporting transition by offering a short immersion in the subject that places disciplinarity at its heart. The model is designed to be widely applicable, delivered:
(i) online - for pre-arrival learners and
(ii) face-to-face in a Welcome Week activity. This could then possibly link to
(iii) a live project at L4 as part of the HSE Commitment.
The Pre- Arrival aspect of the model works as an online transition resource, presenting to be completed by new students prior to their arrival at the university: Orientate, Apply, Connect. Learn more on the Online Pre-arrival page.
Following on from the online session - A Taste of 'x' at SHU - the Welcome Week aims to provide students with the opportunity to experience their course from the offset. It gives students an introduction of 'Being & Becoming' whatever they aspire to be. Find out more on the Welcome Week page.
Following the Online Pre-Arrival and Welcome Week activities, there is an opportunity for academics to engage their level 4 students in live work-related learning projects. Discover more on the Level 4 Live Project page.
