Overview
Students will understand how to protect human subjects and after training will earn IRB Certification through MSU.
Students can't be listed as a PI if it has a Human Subject: list someone with an Assistant Professor or higher.

Overview: Students will learn about how to protect Human Subjects in Research. We will review the Institutional Review Board and how our project fits into those requirements.

When conducting any research involving human subjects, it is essential to understand and follow guidelines for protecting their privacy and rights. Before doing research in MI841, you need to complete human subjects protection training.

Anyone engaged in human research overseen by MSU including MI 841 students must complete the human research protection training (HRPP/IRB Certification). If you have questions about what training is required, please contact the HRPP office at irb@msu.edu or
517-355-2180.
Login to the Ability training system above. In your Requirements tile, click the + and add the Human Research Protection track. You must complete both courses:
Overview of Human Research Protection at MSU, and
Ethical and Regulatory Considerations
You will have to do a search by keyword to find it.
The training takes 30 to 90 minutes to complete.

Course Description and Instructions:
In conducting your research, you may propose to use humans. The session will help you understand the requirements both at the level of MSU and federal government that you must fulfill to be able to use human subjects in your research, and how to fulfill these requirements practically.
Learning Objectives
Be able to:
Define the definitions of research and human subjects from The Research Act of 1974, 45 CFR 46.102 (d), (f).
Explain the reasons for federal regulations about human subjects research
Explain the Belmont Report principles of respect for persons, beneficence, and justice
Describe at least three historical examples of the abuse of human subjects that led to legislation designed to protect the rights of human research participants
Define investigator responsibilities associated with IRB approval of research involving human subjects
Define the consequences for a student for failing to obtain IRB approval before initiating research involving human subjects

Add Track: If you are listed in a project being reviewed by MSU IRB, you must also add the Human Research Protection Track to your My Requirements list if it is not already one of your tracks.
Alternative: If you have previous training from another institution, you may request a review of whether that training meets the requirements of this course. See detailed instructions under the Equivalencies in the Ability Training Site.

When you have completed the training, you will see the courses listed there. If you have already completed human subjects training prior to the honors course, awesome, you’re all set, just post your certificate to submit it.
