Leg Two will be a thru-hike of Minnesota’s longest footpath, the Superior Hiking Trail (SHT). Stretching roughly 320 miles, the trail runs from the Minnesota–Canadian border south through the rugged Sawtooth Mountains, closely following the dramatic ridgeline above Lake Superior. It winds through boreal forest, river valleys, and historic sections through Duluth, before finishing at Jay Cooke State Park near the Wisconsin border.
We will be traveling southbound, carrying packs weighing approximately 50 pounds, and plan to average 15 miles per day. While Minnesota is often thought of as flat, the Superior Hiking Trail tells a very different story, featuring thousands of feet of cumulative elevation gain with constant climbs and descents along the ridgeline (see map below).
