The Camp
Troop 1100 visits Ockanickon every year. It is definitely one of, if not the most, fun scouting outing (ha, that rhymes) of the year. The camp is located in Buck County, Pennsylvania, which is a minimum of four hours away from Nativity by car. Every year, scouts return with tales of fun, old and new friends, and the life skills they learned.
The Long Haul
Early in the morning on a Sunday, Troop 1100 assembles in the Safeway parking lot to leave for camp. Troop gear is packed, but unlike most camp outs, we do not pack all of the patrol boxes. Instead, we pack first aid kits and picnic table flys. The troop then piles into their assigned cars and the journey begins.
Remember to thank your driver each time you enter and exit their vehicle, because of the time they put in to drive you to camp.
On the road, entertain yourself and other scouts in the car by playing simple, leisurely card and road games, as well as observing the changing scenery. A favorite game of mine is Highway Alphabet, where you team up with everyone in the car to spot words that begin with certain letters in order, going from A to Z.
For lunch, the whole troop will stop at the Biden Rest Center in Delaware. The food there can be pretty expensive, so I recommend packing at least 30 dollars, 15 for the way there, and 15 back. Also pack quarters for the gumball and candy machines.
After eating a meal with your friends, you will continue the car ride to camp. When you arrive, make sure to pay attention to your surroundings to get a good idea of the camp layout.
The Layout
This is the official camp map. This summer we are assigned to the Commanche campsite. Important locations on the map include: The Grand Parade Field, The Pool, Great Buck Lake, The Dan Beard Field, The Mess Hall, and The Trading Post.
Home Again
On Saturday, the troop packs up and drops our gear by the parking lot. We then grab a quick, cold breakfast at the Mess Hall, and head out to the Grand Parade Field. From there, we march out in formation, and form up in front of the large flagpoles. The Camper of the Week awards are presented, troops are congratulated, and are dismissed.
Troop 1100 marches out to the parking lot, sad that it's over, but glad that it happened. We load up into the cars and begin the long haul home. We stop for lunch again at the Biden Rest Center, spending time reminiscing about the week with both scouts from our troop and scouts from other troops traveling in our direction.
When we arrive to the Safeway parking lot we are greeted by our families. Exhausted scouts clamber into their parents' car, thinking about a warm shower, a nap, and fresh clothes (remember to do your laundry).
