The college application process can be both exciting and overwhelming. It typically involves several components, giving you the opportunity to showcase all of your hard work leading up to this point. Remember, your future is in your hands!
While many students may already have a set list of colleges/universities that interest them, it is important to remember that the college you choose should not only match your academic abilities/interests, but also fit your personal lifestyle and needs.
Building a college list using the concept of "Best Fit, Best Match" will help you establish a well rounded college list. This model includes three different categories: Safe School, Target School, Reach School.
College Search Tools:
In addition to general personal information about yourself, your family, and personal interests, most college applications will require the following information:
Transcript(s): Official high school transcript and Robeson Community College transcript (if applicable)
ACT and/or SAT Scores: Effective Fall 2025, students with a weighted GPA between 2.5 and less than 2.8 MUST submit SAT and/or ACT scores. Students with a weighted GPA of 2.8 or higher have the option to submit these scores.
*Test score submission requirements for institutions outside of UNC system may differ.
Essays: Most colleges/universities require students to submit a personal statement (500-650 words). Some institutions require students to answer supplemental essay prompts which are short essays (100-250 words).
While some essays prompts may be similar, other will be school-specific. Reuse your essays if possible!
Letter(s) of Recommendation: It is good practice to have at least 2-3 people who can speak about you and your accomplishments.
Teachers, Coaches, Counselors, Work Supervisor, etc.
Application Fee: Application fees can range anywhere between $35-$85.
See Ms. Tehya to inquire about FEE WAIVERS!
During College Application Week (Oct. 20th-26th), most North Carolina colleges and universities waive their application fees. Click HERE to learn more about CAW.
Most colleges/universities will have their own specific application deadlines. Be sure to keep track of the deadlines provided by your institutions of interest. Remember, the earlier you apply, the better your chances are to receive institutional aid!
