Symptoms of sleep apnoea mainly happen while you sleep.

Risk factors for sleep apnea include:
Being male
Being overweight
Being over age 40
Having a large neck size (17 inches or greater in men and 16 inches or greater in women)

Treatments for sleep apnea
*Sleep apnea does not always need to be treated if it's mild.
But many people need to use a device called a CPAP machine. You'll be given this for free on the NHS if you need it.
*You may be able to treat it with some lifestyle changes. Your doctor may recommend that you:
Lose weight. About half of all people with sleep apnea are overweight or obese. If you have some extra weight, slimming down -- even by a few pounds -- can often improve your symptoms.
Not use alcohol and sleeping pills. They decrease the muscle tone in the back of your throat, which can interfere with air flow.
Change sleep positions. You may breathe easier if you stay off your back. Here’s a trick to keep from rolling over: Put two tennis balls into a tube sock and pin it to the back of your PJs.
Stop smoking. Smoking can increase swelling in your upper airway, which may make both snoring and apnea worse.
Treat allergies. Nasal allergies swell the tissues in your airways and make them narrower, so it’s harder to breathe. Ask your doctor how to get them under control.
What foods are good for sleep apnea?
Fruits and vegetables: Rich in nutrients and fibers – and of course low on calories – fruits and vegetables are ideal substitutes for cookies and candy. Also, fiber promotes a longer feeling of fullness; the longer you feel full, the less likely you are to overeat. This is especially crucial, as most sleep apnea sufferers tend to be overweight. Just avoid bananas (we’ll get to that later, promise).
Low-fat dairy products: Full of vitamin D, protein, and calcium, low-fat dairy also helps you feel fuller, longer. Try swapping out whole milk, heavy cream, and cheddar cheese for skim or low-fat milk and part-skim mozzarella cheese. Again, these foods will help promote healthy weight management, which in turn aids in your sleep apnea management.
Plant-based oils: Overweight sleep apnea sufferers can also benefit from the unsaturated fats from plant-based oils as a great substitute for saturated fats in butter and margarine. Oils from canola, olives, safflowers, sunflowers, flaxseeds, and of course vegetables mean a wide variety of options.
Whole grains: Whole grains operate in much of the same way as fruits and vegetables – they are richer in nutrients and fibers, which makes you feel fuller for a longer amount of time. Breads and cereals have a wide variety of whole grain options, and you can also opt for wild or brown rice, pearled barley, and old-fashioned oats.
Foods that Make Sleep Apnea Symptoms Worse
Burgers, steak, pork, bacon, lamb, and sausage are all meats that are high in saturated fats. Eating too much of these items can cause inflammation throughout your body, which can lead to cardiovascular problems. This is a big risk factor if you have sleep apnea, so it's best to avoid consuming these products.
Can Sleep Apnea be cured with surgery?
Palate Implants:
Palatal implants may be effective in select individuals with snoring or mild sleep apnea. Small semi-rigid rods are inserted into the soft palate in a minimally invasive fashion to support the palatal soft tissues and prevent airway collapse, a common cause of snoring and sleep apnea.
Radiofrequency Volumetric Tissue Reduction (RFVTR) / Somnoplasty:
RFVTR is a minimally invasive treatment option for individuals with mild to moderate sleep apnea. It uses heat to shrink and tighten the tissues in and surrounding the throat, such as the soft palate, tonsils. and tongue.

The septum is the midline nasal structure that separates the nasal passages. Septoplasty is the surgical correction of a significantly off-center, warped or crooked septum. Turbinates are mucosa covered structures in the nose that humidify, warm, and filter air coming through the nose. Turbinates can become enlarged most commonly from environmental allergens, and obstruct the nasal airway. Surgery can be performed to reduce the size of the turbinates as well. Optimizing the nasal airway improves daytime and nighttime breathing through the nose. It may also assist with improved use of the CPAP machine.
Sleep apnea surgery recovery time
You will probably be able to go back to work or to most of your usual activities 1 to 2 weeks after surgery. But you may need up to 3 to 6 weeks to fully recover.
Over the next 3 to 6 weeks, you should start to have better airflow. You may find that you snore less or not at all.

Body work-out- Even when exercise does not lead to weight loss, it can decrease your sleep apnea breathing episodes and improve your alertness and energy during the day. Aerobic exercise, resistance training, and yoga are all good choices for strengthening the muscles in your airways and improving breathing.
Can you die in your sleep from sleep apnea?
Sleep apnea is closely linked to several life-threatening conditions. It may cause or worsen chronic illnesses like high blood pressure. Sleep apnea can lead to sudden cardiac death. If you have a history of stroke, heart disease, diabetes, or another chronic illness, ask your doctor to test you for sleep apnea.
How can you tell if your child has sleep apnea?
Pediatric obstructive sleep apnea is a sleep disorder in which your child's breathing is partially or completely blocked repeatedly during sleep.
