Delivered by a qualified Mountain Leader, The ‘Tony Lucas Training’ & ‘WorkSafe’ Outdoor First Aid course is a programme of learning designed to meet with the specific first aid training requirements of outdoor organisations such as Mountain Training (England, Cymru, Scotland). These organisations usually stipulate a minimum criteria for delivery time and subjects that candidates must cover.
The syllabus for WorkSafe Outdoor First Aid is based on best practice from the industry. It is a 2 day course with a minimum of 16 hours of guided learning. Prior to booking / attending the course, organisers should ensure the qualification is accepted by the governing body they are training for.
WorkSafe Outdoor First Aid is equally suitable for anyone who is involved with outdoor activities, particularly for those leading groups of people in the outdoors where attendance of emergency services may be delayed.
Course Content
The content of the programme meets with the recommendations for Appointed Persons in the workplace under The Health & Safety (First Aid) Regulations 1981. These regulations are defined in the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) Approved Code of Practice and Guidance (ACOP) document L74. This qualification is valid for 3 years, with annual skill refreshers recommended by the HSE to maintain competence.
This qualification will equip the first aider with skills to be able to confidently undertake emergency first aid if someone becomes ill or injured in the area of operation and provide effective care for a wide range of common area of operation injuries and illnesses.
Candidates will receive training in a wide range of first aid skills including:
The ability to act safely and effectively when an accident or emergency occurs.
The treatment and priorities of care for an unconscious patient.
The recognition of cardiac arrest and delivery of cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (CPR) including drowning.
The ability to safely and promptly treat a patient who is bleeding.
The ability to recognise and treat a patient in shock.
The keeping of simple records following an accident at work.
Students will also learn to provide care for patients who have
Suffered a burn or scald
Suffering choking
Injured bones, muscles or joints
Injuries to the head, neck and back
Been poisoned by ingestion or inhalation of a substance or gas
Suffered an injury to the eye
Suffering from environmental conditions (heat & cold)
Signs & symptoms of a major illness e.g. heart attack, stroke etc
Students will also have the opportunity to develop experience in

· Managing casualties outdoors & improvised shelters
· Moving & carrying
Assessment
The WorkSafe Outdoor programme requires the instructor to complete ongoing assessment of practical skills along with a candidate summative self-assessment questionnaire
