TEW currently works with 4 schools in Guatemala. Each project is initiated, requested and fully supported by the school principal.
Exciting Projects in Guatemala in 2019
1. Mental health program
· 250-300 students and 10 teachers at the school near the garbage dump
Assessment, program development and monitoring by locally qualified clinical psychologist and his team
Program includes mentoring and skills transfer for the teachers
Outcomes: Improved focus and ability to concentrate, increased self-confidence and better grades, reduced absenteeism
2. Vitamins and other medications—supplementing daily Breakfast programs
1,650 students at 3 schools
Daily vitamins for students
Medicines for common illnesses (allergies, intestinal, respiratory)
3. Backpack and school supplies
75 backpacks filled with pencils, pens, rulers, notebooks and other useful items, for students who cannot afford these essential materials
Better grades and success in school
4. Aquaponics (Aquaculture + Hydroponics)
Remediation of contaminated water supply at the school and existing aquaponics facility, resulting in clean water for production of fish and fresh vegetables for the school community
The project is led by the science teacher and a core team of 5 students
1,000 students: Science, health, project management
30-40 teachers: New teaching techniques and training plans
Families: Options for increased protein consumption and balanced diet
· Rural communities: Opportunities for employment, new farming techniques, options during droughts and as climate changes
