Leadership Education is the foundation of the MCJROTC curriculum. It uses the principles of Marine Corps leadership to teach and instill responsibility, loyalty, discipline, and strong character in cadets. Over the course of the four-year program, Leadership Education is delivered through five key categories of instruction:
Leadership
Citizenship
Personal Growth and Responsibility
Public Service and Career Exploration
General Military Subjects
Cadet Participation
Cadets in the MCJROTC program are enrolled in a Leadership Education (LE) level based on the number of years they have completed in the program. LE-1 is designated for first-year cadets, while LE-4 is reserved for those who have successfully completed LE-1 through LE-3. Each level builds upon the last, progressively developing the cadet’s leadership skills, knowledge, and responsibilities.
Leadership Education III
In LE-III, cadets begin to apply their leadership training by taking on greater authority and responsibility within the program. They may serve in leadership roles, mentor junior cadets, and help plan unit activities. This year also includes in-depth instruction on personal finance and other essential life skills to help prepare cadets for success beyond high school.
Leadership Education I
The first year of the program introduces cadets to the fundamentals of leadership and citizenship. It also focuses on personal growth, responsibility, and self-discipline, while laying the groundwork for understanding military structure, customs, and traditions. This foundational year prepares cadets for greater responsibilities in the years ahead.
Leadership Education IV
LE-IV is the culminating year of the MCJROTC program, where cadets bring together all the leadership skills and experiences they’ve gained throughout their time in the program. Senior cadets take on major leadership roles by conducting formations and inspections, as well as supervising and mentoring younger cadets during training events. This final year emphasizes leadership in action, accountability, and setting the standard for others to follow.
Leadership Education II
The second year of the program builds on the leadership and citizenship lessons introduced in LE-I. In LE-II, cadets receive instruction in general military subjects and gain a deeper understanding of military structure and tradition. New topics such as civilian marksmanship training and land navigation using maps and a compass are introduced. This year also offers expanded opportunities for personal growth, responsibility, and active citizenship development.
