In the first activity we learned how important smoke alarms are and how we can check that they are still working.
Today, we will look at how many smoke alarms we should have and where to place them in our homes.
How many smoke alarms you need
Where they should be placed
A floor plan is a bird's-eye view onto your house without a roof. The straight lines are the walls and the thin, curved lines show how the doors open into the rooms.
The red and blue dots are the places where you should have a smoke alarm.
If you can only afford one smoke alarm, place it in the hallway (red dot).
Go around your house and check where all your smoke alarms are. If you don't have any smoke alarms yet, see where you should put them.
CREATE ACTIVITY
Draw a floor plan of YOUR house and use one colour to show where your current smoke alarms are and another colour to show where they should be.
SHARE
Share your floor plan with your kaiako/teacher and send it to us at this address: FireWiseTasmanMarlborough@fireandemergency.nz
Watch the video below to find out how.
Remember, you can buy new smoke alarms in supermarkets. Some shops, like The Warehouse or Mitre 10, deliver them to your door even during the lockdown.
