Setting targets helps learners to keep focused, stay motivated, track their progress and achieve long and short term goals.
Setting targets in eTracker
Did you know the eTracker has a build in target setting feature? This is called Action Plans. The video guide below demonstrates how you can access this feature.
When setting a target, consider:
Note - we recommend when writing an Action Plan for a learner that you use ‘you’ to address the learner directly – this is feedback that they will be able to view on eTracker and we’re completing this for their benefit.
Sentence stems you might use to help learners’ development:
You need to work on __________
It’s important for you to focus on ____________
You will benefit from completing __________
Developing _________ will help you make greater progress.
Improving your ______________ will help you make greater progress
When writing action plans, consider what the learner needs to make progress in. It might be that their area for development is knowledge based (eg. they need to practise calculating ratio, or revise how to effectively skim and scan a text), or behaviour based (ie. they need to focus on being more collaborative in class).
Completing eTracker Action Plans with learners
Setting whole class targets
As a teacher you can set whole class targets by ticking the ‘Assign this Action Plan to other selected students in the same group’ button when setting an Action Plan (see below).
We recommend that you set whole class or group targets for your learners that relate to key progress goals throughout the year. These should be set and reviewed at least once per term.
Setting individual targets
As a teacher you can add individual action plans for your learners. In addition to this, learners are able to add their own targets using the same process. We recommend that you set whole class/group targets, while learners themselves set individual targets. This can be done in class.
Learners taking ownership of their own learning journey is crucial. Once a learner has set themselves a target you can ‘verify’ it to agree with what has been suggested (see below).
