Lesson planning can seem a daunting task. There are many variations of aids to lesson planning. Whatever system you use, do not get bogged down with minutiae.
Concentrate on the Is.
Intent - What you want the students to gain from the lesson and why you are doing it?
Implementation - How you are going to do it?
Impact - How you are going to evaluate students knowledge and understanding against expectations?
The three Is
Intent
Every lesson should have a clear purpose driving it
Questions you should ask yourself:
Why is this session important to the student?
What are my expectations at the end of the session?
Why am I doing it now, rather than 3 weeks ago, or in 3 weeks time?
Implementation
Putting the lesson into practice
Questions you should ask yourself:
What differentiation will I need to use?
How many sessions will it take and what are the expectations at the end of each session?
What resources will I need?
Will I need to alter the room layout and seating plan?
Impact
The difference to students the lesson has made.
Questions you should ask yourself:
How am I going to measure progress?
Did students progress match my expectations?
Do I need to repeat – maybe in a slightly different way – to encourage consolidation?
Do I need to change something next time?
Do I need to challenge students more – were they, for example, bored or restless?

In this video John and Hayley provide an introduction to the BDC Plan for Learning template.
They offer insight into each section of the plan, and how each one relates to one another.
