Why is sleep important?
Modern-day living in Canada and many other countries in the world does not always embrace the necessity for adequate sleep. Yet, getting enough sleep is essential for helping an individual maintain optimal health and well-being.
The following are some key benefits of getting a good night's rest.
Several studies have linked adequate sleep to improved brain functions including concentration, productivity, mental well-being and cognition which in turn leads to better academic performance. The result of a study (Marc et al., 2021) in a residential college at the National College of Singapore reveals a significant association between sleep variables, psychological well-being and academic performance.
There have been several studies that have linked obesity and poor sleep patterns. A lack of sleep may affect a person's desire or ability to maintain a healthy lifestyle. There is evidence that getting a good night's sleep can help a person consume fewer calories throughout the day. For example, one study in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United State of America suggests that sleep pattern affects the hormone responsible for appetite.
If your sport requires quick bursts of energy, like wrestling or weightlifting, sleep loss may not affect you as much as with endurance sports like running, swimming, and biking. But you're not doing yourself any favours.
Besides robbing you of energy and time for muscle repair, lack of sleep saps your motivation, which is what gets you to the finish line. You'll face a harder mental and physical challenge -- and see slower reaction times. Proper rest sets you up for your best performance.
Someone who does not get adequate sleep is more likely to have issues with recognizing other people’s emotions and expressions. A person’s emotional empathy is less when they do not get adequate sleep.
