The last time we visited Pearl, we came in to show her the photos we had taken. She got so excited after seeing them that she brought out her own photos to show us. They had been taken when her family all visited because of her 'Making Memories' event. The photographs prompted her to tell us stories of her family. Remembering and sharing these stories made her really happy and I enjoyed hearing them as well.
My photographs are my way of doing the same thing. They remind me of the time we spent with them so that I may share these stories with others. These memories are important to me and I'm glad that I have visual reminders of them to share.
Inez loved seeing our photos too, she laughed and made jokes at her expressions but she thought they were nice. She talked about her family and pointed out the photos on the wall as she spoke of them.
Photographs are a way of preserving and sharing stories of things that are important to us. In the same way, these prints lend importance through the way they were made. The photos remind me of the time I spent making them as well as the time I spent taking them.
I chose to print pictures of the residents smiling, sharing stories, and of objects in the room that reminded me of them. I specifically wanted to include pictures of flowers because they represent life and growth.
I want to always remember the memories I made during this project and these photographs will help me share these memories.
One of these pictures "Pearl Sharpe" was featured alongside my classmates in the windows of the Corner Brook Town Hall for a time in 2021. There was even a CBC News Article written by James Grudić about the project.
