Shrouding mirrors is common practice in a lot of folklore. In some cultures, sleep is thought of as a tiny death, covering mirrors at night keeps your spirit from leaving the body and prevents other spirits from entering your home or dreams. There are also beliefs that the souls of the recently deceased may become confused and get trapped in mirrors and are to be covered to aid the deceased in finding rest. Another superstition is that the first person to see their reflection in a house where someone recently died is also doomed to death. Additionally viewing a mirror with candlelight is said to reveal spirits usually unseen or bring bad luck.
