Artifact #1
Pictures of Fall/Leaves Science Unit
Description: These pictures depict a science unit where we discussed the four seasons, but the lesson allowed students to observe, collect, and categorize different types of fall leaves. We not only explored the content area of Science, but we also implemented art and literacy aspects of autumn foliage. We went on a scavenger hunt to find fall-related materials. We brought them back to class to complete a leaf investigation and experiment while implementing the scientific method.
Connection: 2N) facilitates learning experiences that make connections to other content areas and to life experiences; Designing lessons integrating concepts from different subject areas is important. Relating lessons to practical, real-life situations shows students how the knowledge they are acquiring is applicable to lifelong and real-world learning. It also allows for students to see the interconnectedness of knowledge and how different disciplines contribute to a broader understanding. When students are encouraged to ask questions and seek answers, they are more likely to make connections and understand the relevance of their learning. It also encourages curiosity and self-directed knowledge.
Learned: By implementing these strategies, educators can create a more enriching and interconnected learning environment that goes beyond isolated subject areas and connects to students' broader experiences and the world around them. When designing lessons, it's also essential to build in time for reflection and class discussions. Allowing students to share their thoughts on how the content connects to their lives and experiences can deepen understanding and promote a sense of relevance.
Description: Article two is a paper about educational pioneers and philosophers who influenced what I consider a good teacher. In the essay, we had to write about teachers who made a difference in our academic careers and how they relate to education pioneers responsible for shaping the foundation of education, such as Johann Comenius, Jean-Jacques Rousseau, John Dewey, and Maria Montessori, to name a few.
Connection: 2A) understands theories and philosophies of learning and human development as they relate to the range of students in the classroom; Understanding theories and philosophies of learning and human development is essential for educators to create effective and inclusive teaching strategies. Understanding ideas and philosophies from influential people who made the foundation of education including, but not limited to, Howard Gardner and his multiple intelligence, Urie Bronfenbrenner examining how the environment influences human development or how Vygotsky encouraging scaffolding helps educators tailor their teaching methods to accommodate the diverse needs, learning styles, and developmental stages of students in the classroom. It enables the creation of inclusive and effective learning environments that support the growth and success of all learners.
Learned: Understanding theories and philosophies of learning in the context of diverse students is crucial for inclusive teaching, differentiated instruction, equitable learning opportunities, cultural sensitivity, and supporting a variety of learning differences. Awareness of various learning theories allows educators to be responsive to students' changing needs and developmental stages, adapting teaching methods accordingly. Educators knowledgeable about different approaches and philosophies of learning are better equipped for continuous professional development. Educators can also adjust to new educational trends and research, ensuring their teaching practices remain relevant and practical.
