Debate is great way to improve one's writing, research, and critical thinking all in one activity. Whether a debater is with a partner or alone they can gain experience as well as a team of friends interested in organized and professional arguing. Learning debate teaches not only how to properly organize arguments, but also how to use evidence against an opponent. In joining debate you can try out multiple forms of debate that include being alone, with a partner, prepared, or unprepared. Debate is a way to talk about current events, policies, and case studies about a variety of national to global topics. Debate takes time to learn, but the more you practice the more you will grow and understand. A great thing about debate is that for those who feel overwhelmed there are "novice" debates, meaning at a tournament a newcomer can be assigned to debate other newcomers. However, for those who like a challenge or have experience you can jump right into "open" debate against others with experience and learn from them. Debate is a rewarding and a beneficial activity from the day you start, and for these reasons the Speech and Debate team urges a vote in trying out debate!
