Hi everyone! My name is Vishvak (Vish) Gernapudi, and I’m a rising junior at Towson High School. I’ve been involved in Model UN and Speech & Debate, and I really enjoy exploring topics involving international affairs, science, ethics, and public policy. Outside of MUN, I play viola, compete in the USA Biology Olympiad, and enjoy research and science-related projects. I’m also involved in several clubs and leadership activities at school, so I’m always looking for new opportunities to learn and meet new people.
It is my great pleasure to be serving as your SOCHUM chair at THSMUNC! SOCHUM is a United Nations General Assembly committee which is responsible for addressing matters related to human rights, social issues, humanitarian aspects, and culture. At THSMUNC, delegates will be deliberating on “Ethics and Equitable Accessibility of Human Gene Editing Technologies” with regards to the way in which the international community can reconcile the benefits of technologies such as CRISPR with ethical considerations, human rights, and accessibility. The main thing I would like to achieve as your chair is to ensure that the committee is both difficult and pleasant for everybody, whether it’s your first time attending an MUN conference or you have attended many of them already. Ona and I have worked hard on this background guide and are both super excited to be your chair for this committee. We hope all of you come prepared and ready to have fun! Hello delegates!
My name is Christabelle(Ona) Ebigbo, and I’m a rising junior at Towson High School. I’ve been involved in Model UN since my freshman year.Outside of MUN, I participate in MC and am passionate about poetry and theater. What I enjoy most about Model UN is the research process and the public speaking aspect. I love hearing strong arguments and different perspectives from both sides, and I’m looking forward to the thoughtful debates and ideas you all will bring to the committee.
THSMUNC was actually my first conference, so it’s both exciting and an honor to now serve as your SOCHUM chair for the first time as well.This year, SOCHUM also known as the Social, Humanitarian and Cultural committee will be discussing the ethics and equitable accessibility of human gene editing technologies. Vish and I have worked hard to create a background guide and select a topic that is both relevant and complex, and we are both excited to see your work and discussion in committee this October.
As your chair, my goal is to make this experience positive and engaging for everyone, whether this is your first conference or your fifth. I hope everyone feels comfortable enough to participate in debate, and my best advice is to come prepared and ready to engage with the committee,either through speaking or drafting.

Social, Humanitarian, and Cultural Committee (SOCHUM) is referred to as the Third Committee of the United Nations General Assembly. In this Committee, delegates will be considering ethics and equitable accessibility of human gene editing technology, which is the problem where science and human rights converge and intersect each other. Human gene editing is defined as the process of manipulating an individual's DNA in many ways, from curing and preventing diseases to heritable genetic alterations that could influence the next generations. As these technologies advance, there arises a need to address urgent ethical questions regarding the usage of this type of technology as well as its equitable accessibility in an international context.
