The Instructor sighs.
Instructor: We’d better speed this up before those two cause more trouble. John, you’re up.
John: You got it, Instructor.
John nonchalantly walks up to the summoning circle. The older brother of Mark at the age of 23, John is almost the complete opposite of his brother. John isn’t as handsome as Chris, but his sleek build, tied back brown hair, and charming smile definitely make him pleasant on the eyes. Furthermore, John is carefree and friendly to everyone, a stark contrast to his brother.
Chris: You’d better summon someone better than an old geezer, John.
John: Don’t worry. My servant will be a hundred times better than that old guy with a stick.
Mark: —Sigh— Why is everyone making fun of my servant?
Elizabeth: Ignore them, Mark. Noah’s an excellent servant.
Mark: Thanks, Liz.
After reaching the summoning circle, John takes a moment to stretch as if he’s about to run a race. Once done, he recites the summoning spell and the room is again filled with light. Once the light fades, standing in the circle is a knight clad from head to toe in glistening armor with a shield in one hand and an ebony spear in the other.
Servant: I am Lancer Britomart. On my honor as a knight and upon my enchanted spear, Artegall, I shall bring victory to my master.
So proudly declares the knight in a deep tone of voice.
John: I told you guys my servant would be great! Britomart, the legendary knight who ……… wait, I don’t recall ever hearing about Britomart.
John and the other students take pondering poses as they try and think of the legend of Britomart.
Instructor: It’s not surprising all of you are unfamiliar with the legend of Britomart. Britomart’s legend takes place during the same time as King Arthur’s, which is a far more legendary tale. To briefly summarize it, Britomart was a princess who saw a knight in Merlin’s mirror and fell madly in love. She took up the mantle of a knight and went on a great journey filled with many fascinating encounters until she finally met and married her lover from the mirror. Is that correct, Britomart?
Britomart: Yes, that about summarizes my life.
John: Ah, is that so. Are you at least strong, Britomart?
Britomart: None have ever withstood my lance.
John: Good enough for me!
Everyone in the room seems satisfied with the situation, except one.
Chris: What’s up, Zeus? You look troubled.
Zeus: In all my time, I have always been able to tell the gender of another at a glance. Until now.
Zeus looks towards Britomart.
Zeus: I cannot tell to what sex that knight belongs.
John: True, Britomart is supposed to be a woman but her voice is definitely that of a man. So, which are you, Britomart?
Britomart: My gender matters not for I am a knight first and foremost.
John: There you have it.
Zeus: That is an unacceptable answer! I must know the answer!
Chris: Whoa! Calm down, buddy. It’s not that important.
Zeus: Of course it is! I must know if there is a ripe beautiful flower behind that armor!
Noah: Such a lustful, unsightly, pagan god.
Zeus: Shut up before I fry you, lowly shepherd!
Instructor: ENOUGH! We’re moving on to the next summoning.

Instructor: Elizabeth, it’s finally your turn.
Elizabeth: Yes, Instructor!
Elizabeth quickly walks towards the summoning circle. Similar to Mark, Elizabeth is more timid than outgoing. She is on the petite side, standing only five-seven, and has neat, shoulder-length, blonde hair. Elizabeth is commonly rated in the top five of “the most attractive girls of the school” (unofficial) poll, much to her dismay. However, when upset, Elizabeth can become as fierce as a stampeding elephant, which the others can all attest too.
As Elizabeth walks towards the summoning circle, the Instructor quietly mumbles to himself.
Instructor: The last three summons were of the Archer, Rider, and Lancer classes. That only leaves … I’ve got a bad feeling about this.
John: Good luck, Liz.
Chris: No pressure, Liz. You can’t possibly summon a worse servant than Mark.
Mark: Give it a rest already! Best of luck, Liz.
Elizabeth smiles faintly and takes a deep breath. She then recites the summoning spell the same as the others and the all too familiar bright light fills the room. What appears from the circle is—
Zeus: —Gulp—
Servant: I am Hera, goddess of women and marriage, queen of Olympus, and wife of Zeus. It would seem I have been summoned as a Berserker, how fitting.
So proclaims the beautiful woman wearing long, golden, robes and glaring intensively at Zeus.
Elizabeth: Um, I’m Elizabeth. It’s a great honor to meet you, Hera.
Hera turns and smiles at Elizabeth.
Hera: Yes, it’s a pleasure. I’m sure that no good animal over there has already tried to sink his fangs into an adorable girl such as yourself. Not to worry, I won’t let him near you.
Hera starts to walk towards Zeus with an incredibly fast-growing chill in the air.
Zeus: Hera, darling. It’s not what you think. I’ve allowed myself to be summoned solely to aid this human in his plight. Certainly not to mingle with girls.
Hera: Is that so? I believe I told you what would happen if you came to earth again. You’d best be telling the truth.
Zeus: I am! Right, guys?
Chris: Nope.
Mark: Definitely not.
John: He’s lying.
Noah: Divine punishment awaits those who lie.
Britomart: Milady has every right to be furious.
Zeus: TRAITORS!!!!
CRASH!!!!!!!
A split second later, the wall behind where Zeus was standing had a large crater in it caused by Hera’s fist. Zeus barely manages to dodge the attack.
Hera: I’ll let you off with that for now. Next time, I’ll castrate you.
Zeus violently shakes his head yes.
Instructor: Good grief, that’s going to be expensive to fix. Everyone, take your servants and report to the training field in an hour.
Students: Yes, Instructor!
Author’s Notes:
In the third summoning, I wanted someone who more fit the typical vision of a hero. So, I decided to go with Britomart because I thought she would be an interesting choice rather than someone as well-known as King Arthur or Beowulf. I also decided to play around a bit with her gender since I thought it would be amusing if Zeus couldn’t figure it out. Class wise, Britomart really only fit the class of a Lancer since in her tale she primarily used the enchanted spear to beat her foes. In regard to the spear, I didn’t want to just call it “the enchanted spear” so I gave it the name of Artegall after Britomart’s lover. Now for the fourth summoning, I knew I wanted to have a Berserker. So, while trying to think of someone that would fit into that class, I remembered how I represented Hera in the first story. After that, I was pretty much set on having Hera show up to give Zeus the hard time he deserves. Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to explore this relationship too much in this story because of the word limit, but it’s definitely something that’s going to be prevalent in the final story.
