Community college students are more likely to come from underserved populations and are inclined to feelings of self-doubt in academic settings. When learning online, our students need to know they have an instructor who cares and is there to support them, and that they are part of a vibrant learning community. Effective online teachers mindfully cultivate their presence at the course level and one-on-one with students. These interactions foster a relationship based on trust, which is the foundation of a learning community.
I set rules for my class before it starts and I won't break it at all. I was very strict and was not ready to even hear students' voice. I always thought student equity means being fair to all the students until I took this Equity and Culturally Responsive teaching class. It was an eye-opener for me and changed my perspective on how I taught my class.
I have created safe learning environment where students are comfortable in sharing their thoughts and opinions and asking questions without shyness. I want to make sure every student in the class is given opportunity to participate in the class discussions. I understand leaning Math online can be frustrating and I am being very cautious in not being biased (both consciously and unconsciously) and being more open to understand my students’ situations and accommodate reasonably. Get anonymous feedback from my students on how to help them better
Soon I am planning to use liquid syllabus which will be easier to access in any device and the changes will be updated instantly on all the syllabus links. Research and collaborate to learn new techniques to accommodate students with various levels of Mathematical Knowledge particularly due to the AB 705. Restructure my class completely to align with UDL principles, this way students will be given various opportunity to prove their competence. For example instead of taking an exam, student can prefer to do a project and/or presentation.
Introduction Discussion Board assignment helps the students to get know about each other. Through this low-stake assignment, students create a bond with others who share similar likes, dislikes, hobbies, and so forth. This common affinity allows a point of connection beyond any obvious racial, class, or linguistic differences. This plants the seed of connection and belonging which helps the students to participate in the class and feel comfortable in asking questions. Through muddy point discussion board assignment, I ask students to research on resources from the web to help their classmates' questions.
I am very much interested in learning what students thoughts and opinion on the class structure and delivery. This is important for me to improve and help the students better. I give anonymous surveys to get students feedback.
