The world can be a challenging place, and unfortunately, children are not immune to negativity. To combat that, the Thompson DIG invited the community to write positive messages in chalk at Thompson Elementary, in order to empower children, show support for others, and send a strong message against hate and discrimination.
Thank you to everyone who came out to participate!
In May we featured several important facts and figures from Asian Pacific American history on the bulletin board at school. We've posted them here so families can enjoy them at home. Visit this page for more.
Beautiful Hair Day, is Wednesday, May 25th
Your hair is beautiful no matter how you wear it! Let’s celebrate the diversity of hair at Thompson! Come to school wearing your hair in a way that makes you feel good about yourself. Then check the fun stuff on this page for drawing activities, read alouds, and resources on how we can appreciate and be respectful of each others' hair.
Unpacking Whiteness is an 8 session dialogue group with the goal of developing self-awareness and a working knowledge of topics such as white supremacy, explicit and implicit racism, intersectionality, and microaggressions. Afterward participants will better understand the role of whiteness and race relations in our neighborhood, the country, and the world. By creating a safe, brave space to explore the impact of white supremacy on our community, we hope that we can more effectively work toward justice in our own lives and the world at large.
This series is a total of 8 sessions on Sunday mornings from 8am-9:30am on the following dates:
June 26
July 10, 17, 24, 31
August 7, 14, 21
(6/26-8/21, excluding 7/3)
*You also have the option to lead your own group, with support from the Thompson DIG.

April was first designated National Arab American Heritage Month in 2021, but Arab Americans have been a part of the fabric of American culture since the founding of the US. Arab Americans have heritage in the Arab world, which consists of approximately 22 countries stretching from western North Africa to the Arabian peninsula in Western Asia, all of whom share Arabic as an official language. We’ve compiled some family friendly resources for you to share with your kids.
The final tally from the (very!) successful #GivingTuesday fundraiser for our DIG Little Libraries is in! We were able to purchase 101 amazing new books from 5 amazing local bookstores that aligned with the fundraising goals: The Million Year Picnic, Cambridge (Black-owned), Frugal Bookstore, Roxbury (Black-owned), Maxima, Arlington (woman-owned), All She Wrote, Somerville (woman-owned) & Book Wonder, Medford (woman-owned). Here is the spreadsheet of itemized books. Enormous gratitude to community member Angie for leading this charge!
Because they are well loved, our supply of books periodically dwindles so we are continually accepting donations.
If you'd like to contribute financially use the form on this page or click here: Donate Here
You can also direct your Book Rack credit (13 Medford St.) to the “Thompson DIG".

We celebrate Pride in June to commemorate the riot at the Stonewall Inn in NYC, widely considered the birth of the movement, when drag queens rose up in response to years of police brutality. Queer families are often invisible, but we’re everywhere! Take a moment this month to celebrate the fabulousness of our community by celebrating everything that makes human beings weird and unique and amazing, in all our many shapes and forms. Check out these resources.
Thompson’s Chalk the Walk in solidarity with our AAPI (Asian American & Pacific Islander) community was a bright spot during a profoundly difficult time. We had a beautiful showing of love and support. See the pictures here.
Thanks to the PTO every Thompson student will be getting a Crayola Colors of the World skin tone crayons, containing 24 different shades of skin colors, not just brown and peach! With these, we’d like to show our children how varied and beautiful their skin is.
Check out our page for our list of activities and resources on skin color.
