To effectively conserve aquatic species and habitat, we must understand how natural and anthropogenic factors influence the functioning of aquatic food webs. I am an aquatic ecologist interested in using a combination of experimental studies, field-based surveys, and trophic analysis to explore patterns in both freshwater and marine environments. Look for me in a stream or at a local beach with my head underwater!
Watch Seattle University students join NOAA researchers and other local partners during a day of research collecting river temperature data in the Elwha River!
As part of the Sea Webs Field Cooperative at Seattle University, a small team of students survey Puget Sound Kelp forests every Spring in partnership with the WA Department of Fish and Wildlife.
The seagrass monitoring project is part of the Sea Webs Field Cooperative at Seattle University. The objective of this research is to study the shifting community composition and footprint of seagrass beds in the Puget Sound in response to climate change.
For the past 18 years my research has involved fieldwork in aquatic environments in the Western U.S.A., Europe, and Southeast Asia.
I strive to integrate teaching and research into a learning experience that prepares students for an array of post-undergraduate jobs.
Each Winter quarter, students from all different departments come together in the SU Maker Space to design and build an aquatic ROV.
DIVERSITY IN STEM
Creating equal opportunity for all
As an researcher and educator, I strive to take tangible steps to create an inclusive and diverse scientific community. More specifically, I try to work with high school age students to foster an interest in conservation biology and careers in science.
SEATTLE MESA - I was an instructor for Seattle MESA for 6 years. The program helps students at local middle and senior high schools to excel in math and science, and become competitively eligible for the nation’s most rigorous colleges and universities.
INNER CITY OUTINGS - I worked with Sierra Club ICO as a volunteer leader for 7 years. It is a community outreach program providing opportunities for urban youth to explore, enjoy, and protect the natural world.
