Thomas CHIU
I am an Associate Professor of AI and STEM Education in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction at The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK). I also serve as Associate Director of two key centers: the University and School Partnership and the Learning Sciences and Technologies. With a strong interdisciplinary background in mathematics, computer science, and education, I bring extensive teaching and leadership experience from both schools and higher education.
An internationally recognized scholar, I am a visiting scholar/fellow at leading universities across North America, Europe, Japan, and Australia. Since 2019, he has delivered 12 keynote speeches and over 160 invited talks worldwide, sharing my research insights with academic and professional communities.
Research Expertise
My research focuses on AI in education, STEM/Mathematics education, educational policy, and teacher education, with a current emphasis on AI-enhanced learning, teaching, and training, as well as digital well-being. To advance my research agenda, I have secured over USD $33.4 million in competitive funding (including $6.1 million as PI/Co-PI and $27.3 million as Co-I) through collaborations with local, regional, and international partners.
Recognized for my scholarly impact, I have been named a Top 2% Most Cited Scientist by Stanford University since 2022 (ranking 69th in 2024). I am the recipient of multiple prestigious awards, including the Research Excellence Award (2022-23) from CUHK, as well as teaching awards from The University of Hong Kong and the Hong Kong Education Bureau.
Leadership in Academic Publishing & Service
I am the Editor-in-Chief of Interactive Learning Environments (ILE, Q1) and serve as Associate Editor for three leading journals: International Journal of STEM Education (IJSTEM, Q1), Australasian Journal of Educational Technology (AJET, Q1), and The Asia-Pacific Education Researcher (TAPER, Q1)
Additionally, I sit on the editorial boards of multiple journals in STEM education and educational technology and acts as a reviewer for over 50 international journals and competitive grant programs. I am also an International Scholar at the Center for Self-Determination Theory (SDT).
Teaching & Advisory Roles
As Joint-Faculty Program Coordinator of the BSc in Learning Design and Technology, I specialize in educational technology, STEM/mathematics education, and research methods. I actively contribute to policy development, serving on advisory panels for digital education and curriculum reform. I provide consultancy services to EdTech initiatives.
I also provide consultancy services to educational technology and teacher education programs. Outside of work, I am an avid chess, tennis, and football enthusiast.
