During my studies at FH Joanneum in Graz, "Information Design", we worked on several projects which were intended to bring technology and users together.
In the "Perception Lab" at FH Joanneum, we built a comfortable seating arrangement to allow "dreamers" to fly through a landscape using 360° tracked 3D glasses. Control was achieved via two position sensors attached to a pole. Feedback for the "dreamers" was provided through muscle power and pulleys.
Meine Aufgaben:
Level design and integration into the game engine (Unreal Engine 3)
Creation and testing of various flight experiences
Position and orientation changes
Control via 3D trackers
Wind and special effects (fan control and lightning)
In collaboration with Josef Greimel, we produced an installation for Sol LeWitt's exhibition "The Wall" at the Kunsthaus Graz. Using a 3D tracking ball, visitors in the foyer could navigate a monitor over the course of the installation. A "time channel" was generated through a staggered video based on the position and depth of the device, revealing the various stages of the installation of the exhibit "The Wall."
My Tasks:
Hardware Integration & Communication with Program
Transfer of hardware-generated data to Macromedia Director & Lingo (object-oriented programming language)
As part of the semester project "Virtual Company," we worked on a very real-world project. Besides managing the entire company, including order placement and invoicing, the project itself was particularly challenging.
We created a microscopy room installation for the "Vivarium Mariahof." This allowed students to examine water samples they had collected during their school tours, observe tiny aquatic organisms under a microscope, and identify them at a terminal.
These images could be edited, enhanced, and sent via email. The entire project involved many challenges that had to be addressed and integrated: user interface, hardware, software, finances, and time management.
My Tasks:
Database programming for the identification key
Macromedia Director & Lingo had severely limited functionality
The self-developed tool still works 20 years later!
Usability tests & evaluations
User experience
User interface
Hardware procurement with a very limited budget
Microscopes, cameras, touchscreen & mini PC
