Pratyay is a Biotechnologist by training interested in computational biology, machine learning and the development of algorithms. Currently, he is a Prime Minister's Research Fellow in the Department of Biotechnology at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras. Before joining here, he completed his Bachelor in Technology from the National Institute of Technology (NIT) Durgapur in 2020. Pratyay was a visiting scholar at the Biotechnology and Planetary Protection Group (BPPG), Jet Propulsion Laboratory, NASA, USA, in 2023. 

His research primarily focuses on understanding microbial interactions in communities. He has contributed to multiple projects for microbial taxonomy, genomics, metagenomics and metabolic studies. He has also described five novel species, one novel genus isolated from International Space Station (ISS) and associated cleanrooms. Pratyay works on exploring extreme microbial communities from International Space Station (ISS), NASA cleanrooms (SAF and PHSF) and hospital setups.
