The Reason for all This

The Old Grace Housing Cooperative has achieved something new in combining three levels of affordability under one roof. And while the Coop is very pleased to offer 13 suites that can use the provincial Rent Supplement to help pay for occupancy charges, most people who qualify for Rent Supplement do not have the funds to purchase a share in the Co-op. Various organizations have sponsored share purchases to make this housing truly affordable. The hope is for all sponsored units to have 80% of the share cost provided in perpetuity. This should make a significant difference for generations of folks facing hardship in their lives!

The Winnipeg Monthly Quaker Meeting, as part of its testimony of equality and community, has agreed to raise funds to help offset the purchase of a $16,000 share for a one bedroom suite. The Co-op is able to provide the unit at an affordable price due to the support of the Quakers. You can make your charitable contribution to this through Canada Helps. Please indicate your donation is for the affordable housing initiative.

Originally, the book, Things We Say, had been distributed for free and donations welcomed. Donations to the Quakers Affordable Housing Initiative continue to be received! The various sponsors have all but ensured that nearly every one of the 13 low income suites will be affordable in perpetuity. The Old Grace Coop is the back stretch with only $20,000 to go.
