Let's Think Boldly, Together

This week at the Worthington Area Chamber of Commerce luncheon, I had the opportunity to hear from Lark Mallory, Mallory Economic Development Advisors. She reinforced something many of us already know: housing is economic development. She also shared exciting news about the formation of a nonprofit to support the Central Ohio Regional Housing Coalition—a regional collaboration Worthington is proud to be part of.

We can preserve what makes Worthington special without using history as a reason to halt progress. Our city can't build out—we're mostly out of space. That means we must build up, with thoughtful, well-designed housing that fits our character and meets today’s needs, including different types of affordable and accessible homes that allow people to stay in Worthington to live, work, and age.

This isn’t just about housing—it’s about sustainability. More density means:

* Less sprawl, saving our farmland and forests.

* Shorter commutes and fewer cars on the road.

* A stronger case for transit options, like regional rail.

Right now, most of our workforce doesn’t live here. That’s a problem—not just for employers, but for our environmental and economic future.

Thinking big isn’t about tossing ideas into the wind. It’s about setting a strategic vision, and the Worthington Together Comprehensive Plan will give us a path to implement bold, community-driven solutions. Worthington residents asked for big ideas in the Vision Worthington process. Now, it’s time to act.
