The Westgate Project is situated on the unceded, unsurrendered territory of the Algonquin Anishinaabe Nation (Ottawa, Ontario, Canada). The former Westgate Mall (1955-2025), which served the Carlington and West End neighbourhoods, was also located on this Indigenous land.
When engaging with this public history project, remember that our experiences with Westgate did not take place in a neutral setting. As guests on this land, our relationship with Westgate is rooted in territory that has been inhabited and cared for by Indigenous peoples since time immemorial.
As you explore this exhibition and in your daily life, question bias, continue learning, and reflect on your movement through the world. To learn more about the Indigenous territory where you live, visit Native Land and share what you discover with others.
