This public history project presents a virtual exhibition dedicated to preserving the memory of Westgate Mall, Ottawa’s first shopping centre. Westgate Mall opened in early May 1955 and closed for redevelopment on October 31st, 2025.
Prompted by its recent closure and imminent demolition, the project responds to community interest in Westgate Mall’s history. The exhibition draws on archival, primary, and secondary sources to highlight notable events and personal stories from Westgate’s 70 years.
Users can interact with archival photographs, newspaper articles, online videos, and written descriptions. The project aims to make Westgate’s significance accessible and engaging, supporting local efforts to renew appreciation for this beloved Ottawa landmark.
The exhibition aims to increase community access to Westgate’s history, engage users, and maintain collective memory. This project serves community members and reflects the people at the heart of Westgate Mall.
This website forms part of a class project for the ARTH5404F course, “Reconstructing Canada: Postwar Architecture and Design” at Carleton University. In Fall 2025, students in Dr. Michael Windover's class completed final research projects. Each student chose a site of personal interest in the National Capital Region.
Through this website, users can explore Westgate’s historical, social, and cultural significance. The project highlights the mall’s broader role and preserves its legacy as malls close and their function as third places changes.
