The Virginia Garden Walk (VGW) is an architectural landmark in Bernal Heights. It consists of a network of foot paths, stairways, and green space that connects residents and visitors from all over to the independently owned businesses on Cortland Ave. and Mission St., the neighborhood Safeway, Walgreen Pharmacy, the Bernal library, and muni lines 14, 24, and 49. Seniors from the affordable housing on Virginia Ave use the VGW to attend programs at the Bernal Heights Neighborhood Center (BHNC). Students use the VGW to get to the Paul Revere Middle school. The VGW is also a green corridor for birds, mammals, and pollinators to connect from Holly Park to the south, Precita Park to the north,Bernal Heights Park to the east, and all the hidden stairway gardens west to Mission St.
The VGW contains a demonstration garden promoting regenerative practices to improve soil health, conserve water, and create a thriving habitat for pollinators. Nestled into the small urban woodland of mature shrubs, signature trees, and native and endemic plants, there are stones, habitat structures, and other natural wonders. The riches of nature's fallen leaves, mosses, and fungi continue to revitalize the soil of this tiny ecosystem. Visitors are invited to observe the ever changing landscape in their journey on this secret garden path.
