Sugar Cane and the Expansion of Slavery
In 1803, sugar cane plantation expaneded following the Louisiana purchase. Enslaved people were widely used because sugar required vasr, level areas and hard labour. Another trage good, rum, was made from sugar cane molasses. In southern colonies with a suitable climate and land, sugar was primarily grown.
