Activity: Why Did Planters Choose Enslaved Africans?
Instructions:
In small groups of 2-4 you are going to investigate and discuss why enslaved Africans were used for plantation s. Using the information above to answer the following questions:
Question 1:
1. What crops were grown that required a lot of labour?
2. Why were indigenous people and indentured servants not used for a long time?
3. What made enslaved Africans more suitable in the eyes of European plantation owners?
4. What farming skills did Africans bring with them?
5. Do you think these reasons were fair or just? Why or why not?
Question 2:
In pairs 2 - 4 in a group, discuss the above 5 questions using your notes and what the teacher explained to you. In a form of a mind-map or a poster show the following:

The crops that were grown
The skills Africans brought with them
