To balance the Totem Format, there are some bans and changes to how certain cards function. These will be kept to a minimum, as the goal is to play with as much of the cards as possible with their original wording intact. The Totem Format DOES NOT follow bans or erratas of any other format.
The following cards (and any alternate printings of these cards) are completely banned in the Pokemon Totem Format.
These cards have been proven to provide an unfun experience in the Totem Format or cannot exist without massive alterations, and are therefore not allowed to be played. [All Card Visual]
Dark Vileplume TR 13 (Fire Weakness)
Dark Vileplume TR 30 (Fighting Weakness)
The following cards (and any alternate printings of these cards) are not allowed as the Totem of a Deck. These cards have been proven too strong to lead a Totem Deck, and are therefore not allowed in the Totem Zone. [All Card Visual]
This section deals with any cards (and any alternate printings of these cards) that need updated wording to better clarify them in Totem Format variants or any tweaks to the game necessary for a smoother play experience. Totem does not use the official Pokemon Errata list
We strive to keep this list as short as possible.
Pokemon Power: Transform - To fix the issue of transforming to different Pokemon in Multiplayer games via the Pokemon Power. They now read as follows:
“Pokémon Power: Transform
If Ditto is your Active Pokémon at the beginning of your turn or as soon as it becomes Active, choose a new {TARGET} Defending Pokémon and treat it as if it were the same card as that target Defending Pokémon, including type, Hit Points, Weakness, and so on, except Ditto can’t evolve, always has this Pokémon Power, and you may treat any Energy attached to Ditto as Energy of any type. Ditto isn’t a copy of any other Pokémon while Ditto is Asleep, Confused, or Paralyzed.”
Poké-BODY: Overeager - To fix how this card functions in Multiplayer settings, this card will now read as follows:
“Poké-BODY: Overeager
If Sableye is your Active Pokémon at the beginning of the game, you go first. (1v1 matches: If each player’s Active Pokémon has the Overeager Poké-Body, this power does nothing. Multiplayer Matches: If there is more than 1 player, but less than all players have an Active Pokémon with the Overeager Poké-Body, only those players with Overeager will determine who goes first.)”
the following text would be added to all corresponding Lv.X Pokemon cards to clarify how they function in Totem:
"[CARD NAME] can use any In Game Card Text from its previous level that wouldn’t be updated by this card."
the following text would be added to all corresponding Lv.X Pokemon cards to clarify how they function in Totem:
"BREAKS Evolution cards: [CARD NAME] retains the In Game Card text, Weakness, Resistance, and Retreat Cost of its previous Evolution that wouldn’t be updated by this card."
Totem upholds this TCPi errata. Therefore, all older PlusPower cards that 'attach' to the Pokemon, now do not and say the following:
"During this turn, your Pokémon's attacks do 10 more damage to the Active Pokémon (before applying Weakness and Resistance)."
Totem upholds this TCPi errata. Therefore, all Cyrus Prism Star cards now say the following:
"You can play this card only if your Active Pokemon is a [W] or [M] Pokemon.
Your opponent chooses 2 Benched Pokemon and shuffles the others, and all cards attached to them, into their deck."
To fix the issue of leaving certain multiplayer opponents with zero cards, Ace Trainer now reads as follows:
“You can play this card only if you have more Prize cards left than the target opponent.
Each player shuffles their hand into their deck. Then, you draw 6 cards. ALL of your opponents draw 3 cards.
You may only play 1 Supporter card during your turn (before your attack).”
"The Great Ball Rule" - Trainer Cards With The Same Name, But Different Effects
Some older Trainer cards have fundamentally different effects from their newer iterations. You may choose to play these original versions with their original effects intact, but you may only play one card with that name in your deck. Play the card as it reads. Again, Totem does not follow official erratas.
Nicknamed the "Great Ball Rule” for being a prime example, having too many versions of Great Ball with different effects.
Generation 4 Cards - "Trainer" Card Wording
Totem upholds this TCPi errata. Therefore, All of the cards printed from Diamond & Pearl through Call of Legends (DP-CL) that cite the phrase “Trainer cards” are referring to what are now called “Trainer - Item cards”, and will be treated as such.
Trainer Cards Now Classified As "Trainer - Item" Cards
Totem upholds the following TCPi rulings for Item Cards.
These catagories of Trainer cards are now Items
"Trainer-Trainer" from Gen 4
These catagories of Trainer cards are NOT Items
Old Supporter Card Wording
Any Supporter that states,
"You can play only one Supporter card each turn. When you play this card, put it next to your Active Pokémon. When your turn ends, discard this card,"
now ignores that and simply discards the Suppoter after use.
The Charon's Choice RR RT6 Supporter Card now goes back to your hand immediately after playing.
Any effect that states "if/while a Supporter is in play" will now read as "if you have played a Supporter this turn"

Players may put duplicate effect cards together from the following list in their deck:
While official formats have special rules prohibiting these cards being together in decks, Totem does not follow those rules.
