A game of Totem plays similarly to a normal game of Pokemon, but with the following differences…
Players use 100-card decks, instead of 60.
Games will set 10 Prize Cards
The Totem determines what Pokemon & Energy types you can play (Color Identity). Trainer Cards are NOT affected
Decks are Singleton, meaning they may only use one copy of any unique card, aside from Basic energy.
Because of this huge deck, it is recommended to use lower-rarity cards if possible, and to use single-layer protective sleeves.
Useful tools to have for a game of Totem include:
Damage counters
Dice to represent “Tribute Cost” (d6+ dice recommended)
Dice to represent “Totem Points” (d6 dice recommended)
Legal Flipping Coin or Translucent D6 Die
Special Condition Markers that your deck uses
GX Marker, VStar Marker, or any kind of extra tokens for special effects in your deck
The Color Identity are the various Types listed on your Pokemon and Energy cards.
Pokemon: The Color Identity includes any Attack Costs, Attack effects, Abilities, Pokemon Powers, Poke-Powers, Poke-Bodies, Ancient Traits, etc. (Weakness, Resistance, and Retreat Cost are NOT used for Color Identity.)
Dragon {D} and Colorless {C} are always available for all decks, but are not part of Color Identity (see Porygon above)
Energy Cards: All text citing a specific type count toward Color Identity
Trainer Cards: Have no Color Identity.
Here is how you start building your deck.
Each player’s deck will consist of one hundred (100) cards, including the chosen Totem.
You can use any cards in the english sets (Unlimited). If those cards have a different Language variant, you may substitute that in place of the English one.
Your choice of Totem will determine what kind of Pokemon and Energy cards that you can put in your deck. This is your Totem’s “Color Identity”. It’s best that the Totem plays into the deck’s strategy, so choose wisely.
You can run up to 4 copies of a Pokemon with the same name, such as “Pikachu”. But, each copy must be functionally different.
You can only run one copy of a card that is not a Pokemon or Basic Energy (Trainers, Special Energy, etc).
You can run Basic Energy with no count limit.
You must have at least 1 Basic Pokemon in your deck that is NOT the Totem.
New cards are legal for Totem as soon as you can hold a real one.
Foreign cards may be used in your deck instead of their native counterparts
Your deck must have sleeves that do not reveal the backs of the cards
You must have an English reference available at all times (either digitally or physically).
If the card does not have an English version, it cannot be used.
Proxies are currently allowed in this format. Proxies must be clearly printed, and your deck must have sleeves with an opaque color.
It is encouraged to own the real cards or at least a “World Championships Deck” Promo versions of said card, but it is not required (This may change in the future).
